The tomato diet is a tomato-based weight loss diet, which cannot be followed for more than 3 days due to its low calorie intake and its monotony. Like any very restrictive diet, it allows you to lose weight very quickly. The tomato diet echoes many other fad diets, maintained by media personalities and celebrities, who are looking for very fast weight loss. This exclusive diet based on a single food, the tomato, can be tolerated for a few days (three on average), provided that the method of preparation of this fruit vegetable is varied. Tomatoes can be eaten in all their forms, raw, cooked, in salads, in juice, with fresh herbs, spices and lemon juice.
Effectiveness of the tomato diet
The tomato diet allows you to lose weight very quickly (up to 2 kg in 3 days, or even more for men), provided that the preparations are lightly seasoned with oil (3 tablespoons maximum) or any other fat.
With barely 16 calories per 100 g, the tomato could be consumed in large quantities: 1 kg represents only 160 calories or 8% of the average total calorie intake of a woman (Recommended Total Energy Intake: 2,000 kcal).
The tomato also has other virtues:
It is rich in lycopene: an antioxidant which gives the tomato its red color and which would play a role in the prevention of certain cancers (that of the prostate in particular) and the protection of the vessels. An even more effective action when the tomato is eaten cooked.
It is remineralising, due to its richness in minerals (potassium, magnesium, phosphorus).
It is rich in beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A which is involved in night vision among other things.
